A satirist’s view of a caricaturist

 Nshan Beshiktashlian (born in Istanbul, Ottoman Empire, 1898 - died Paris, France, 1972) was a known satirist and a writer.  Diran Ajemian (born in Aleppo, Ottoman Empire, 1902, died Beirut, Lebanon, 1991) was a known caricaturist / cartoonist and a stage actor. The attach is my abridged translation of a segment from Nshan Beshiktashlian’s satires that was posted in the 60th anniversary issue of the literary journal Pakine (page 86), about Diran Ajemian. I post it as an acknowledgement of the accomplished caricaturist / cartoonist Zaven Jabourian, MD. Vahe H. Apelian

“Although a satirist with his sharp pen penetrates the innermost being of a person with the power of his satire, to the point of spilling out the person’s guts, but spares the person’s face. Caricaturists mostly hit the head to bring about an exaggeration of the human face. Woe to those who are regarded having a long nose, or ear; or something short such as eye, or forehead, or is well endowed with lips or skin. In other words, there is no avoiding the blow.

Caricaturing is simply a devil drawing a person’s portrait. It will be worthwhile for every person to see itself through the eyes of the devil. A person’s own eyes lie. Even human machines take part in the lying. Courage and sincerity are the products of the devil. Offending is a difficult virtue, much like holiness is.

Many mishaps would have been avoided if people hung their caricature on the wall of their room, looking at that image and letting everyone see it. Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone had their own album of caricatures, instead of having a more or less deceptive collection of photos? Wouldn't it be nice if candidates for marriage, as well as lovers, exchanged their caricatures? People find it difficult to recognize themselves in the caricature. But they will get used to it when their friends confirm the similarity.

Caricature is the art of the exaggeration that gives the measure of a person. A caricaturist’s exaggeration is a means and is not the goal. By exaggerating the boundaries, it captures the core. Caricaturing is a devilish attack in whichever way. But the real image of a person is his caricature.

Diran Ajemian, is a kind, insightful, sweet and a warm man with a devil’s caricaturing talent. 

And we are his victims and his admirers.”

Երգիծանքը թէեւ  իր սրախօսութեան ամենակարողութեամբ կը մտնէ մարդուն մէջին մէջր, աղիքները դուրս ՚թափելու աստիճան, սակայն կը խնայէ դէմքին։  Ծաղրանկարը, առաւելապէս կը հարուածէ գլուխը, մասնաւորապէս ըլլալով մարդկային դէմքին տգեղութեան հանդէպ։ իր անգթութիւնը ակամայ է։

Ծաղրանկարչութիւնը բոլոր հրեշտակները տապալած կը ճանկէ ճիւաղին  կամ ճանճին մէկ անգեղ մասէն որ կը նահատակէ զայն. Պատանքներով թուղթի վրայ։  Վա՜յ անոնզ որ երկար բան մը ունին -քիթ,ականջ – կամ շատ պզտիկ բան մը -աչք, ճակատ – կամ շատ հաս բան մը -շրթունք, մորթ։ Մէկ խօսքով՝ խուսաբիլ չկայ հարուածէն։

Ծաղրանկարչութիւնը սատանային պարզ ու պայծառ դիմանկարչութիւնն է։ Կ՚արժէ որ ամէն մարդ տեսնէ ինքզինքը, սատանային աչքով։  Մարդուս սեփական աչքերը կը ստեն։ Մարդկային մեքենաներն անգամ մասնակից են ստախօսութեան։ Քաջութիւնն ու անկեղծութիւնը սատանային ապրանքներն են։ Բայց հոգիով մեղանչելը դժուարին առաքինութիւն է, դժուարին սրբութեան չափ։

Ինչքան անպատեհութիւններու առաջքը պիտի առնուած ըլլային, եթէ մարդիկ իրենց ծաղրանկարը կախէին, իրենց սենեակին պատէն, նայելով այդ պատկերին եւ թոյթ տալով որ բոլորը դիտեն։ Հրաշալի բան պիտի չըլլա՞ր, եթէ ամէն մարդ իր ալպոմը ունենար , ծաղրանկարներու ալպոմը, փոխանակ ունենալու լուսանկարներու առաւել կամ նուազ խաբուսիկ հաւաքածոն։ Զմայլելի բան մը պիտի չըլլա՞ր, եթէ ամուսնութեան թեկնածուները, ինչպէս նաեւ սիրահարեալները, փոխանակէին իրենց ծաղրանկարները։

Մարդիկ կը դժուարանան ինքզինքնին ճանչնալ ծաղրանկարին մէջ։ Կը վարժուին սակայն, երբ մանաւանդ բարեկամները կը վաւերացնեն նմանութիւնը։

Ծաղրանկարը արուեստն է չափազանցութեան  մը որ ամէնուն չափը կուտայ, իր չափազանցութիւնը միջոց է եւ ոչ նպատակ։ Իր չափազանցութիւնը թռիչք մըն է, ընդգրկելու համար ենթակային տիրութիւնը կենսական տարածութիւնը ու մէջէն գրաւելու համար միջնաբերդը։  Սատանային յարձակումն է ան, օդային, գլխիվայր, յաղթահարող, շանթային։ Եւ մարդու մը իրական պատկերը իր ծաղրանկարն է։

Տիրան Աճէմեն, այս բարի, խորագէտ, այս անուշ ու տաք արուեսգագէտը այդ հրեղտակատիպ ծաղրանկարչութեան տաղանդաւոր սատանան է։
