Indescribable and Unspeakable Grief: Catholicos Zareh I (1915-1963)

Catholicos Zareh I (1915-1963) 

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the untimely death of the beloved Catholicos Zareh I. His funeral has remained etched in my memory. It took place in Sourp Nshan Cathedral in Beirut. All my schooling up to 1962, the year I graduated from the namesake middle school, was next to the cathedral. I too attended the funeral with friends. I attached my difficult translation of Harout Topjian’s posting and personal testimony about the Catholicos Zareh I, who was the last Catholicos of the Cilician See born in historical Cilicia, in Marash on February 14, 1915 and passed away on February 18, 1963. The title is a quote from Catholicos’s eulogy. I thought it best summed up the community’s overwhelming grief at his untimely death. Harout Topjian noted: "in 1962 I was ordained by Catholicos Zareh. “This year marks the 60th anniversary of the death of Catholicos Zareh I of blessed memory. He was one of the first graduates of the seminary at Antelias. The election of the diplomatic leader of the Prelacy of Aleppo to the Chair of the Catholicos of Cilicia, for whatever reason, was declared invalid by a segment of the people. The newly consecrated Catholicos of All Armenians Vazken I, who had arrived in Antelias to preside over the election of the Catholicos and to anoint the newly elected Catholicos left Antelias without anointing him. His Holiness’s departure and the subsequent events caused the division of the Sees and the division of the diaspora dioceses.

The seven years of Zareh Vehapar, were years of sorrow and anguish. In the words of Patriarch Yeghishe, “contrary to his remarkable achievements, his seven pontifical years became seven open wounds in his soul, inflicted by the merciless and violent rejection, he walked on the path of the cross laid down for him by our people, and he succumbed on that path, struck at his heart.”

Zareh Catholicos was a good-hearted shepherd. "If we ever remember the difficult conditions," Arch. Ardag testified, "especially in the aftermath of his election, and consider the favorable attitude and expression of reputable people towards his person and his conduct; on the other hand if we consider his unwavering kindness in welcoming everyone, we again see his noble soul, solemnity and his resolute benevolence as a clergyman.”

MAGNIFICANT ZAREH was a great religious person who was brought up by those who were raised in the monastery and seminary of Armash.  He was imbued with a deep ecclesiastical consciousness. This celibate priest followed the teachings of the great TEACHER with faith and conviction, becoming a role model for the seminarians and the monks. His Holiness commanded respect from everyone. In his presence, you felt that you were in front of God's deputy. The memory of Blessed Zareh the Catholicos will forever remain bright in the people's memory, as a righteous and a good High Priest, because he lived up to the Gospel’s proclamation, he was truly a man  " in whom there is no deceit."

ԶԱՐԵՀ Ա. ԿԱԹՈՂԻԿՈՍ ՓԱՅԱՍԼԵԱՆ  /1915 - 1963/

Երջանկայիշատակ Զարեհ Ա. Կաթողիկոս, որուն մահուան 60-ամեակը կը նշուի այս տարի , մին եղաւ Անթիլիասի դպրեվանքի անդրանիկ շրջանաւարտներէն:

Հնադարեան Բերիոյ թեմին դիւանագէտ Առաջնորդին ընտրութիւնը Կիլիկիոյ Կաթողիկոսութեան Աթոռին, ինչ ինչ պատճառներով ՝՝անվաւեր՝՝ հռչակուեցաւ ժողովուրդին մէկ խաւէն: Ու նորաօծ Կաթողիկոս Վազգէն Ա. որ Անթիլիաս ժամանած էր նախագահելու կաթողիկոսական ընտրութիւնը եւ օծելու նորընտիր Կաթողիկոսը, առանց օծելու զայն մեկնեցաւ Անթիլիասէն. Վեհափառին այդ մեկնումը եւ յետագային ուրիշ դէպքեր պատճառ հանդիսացան Աթոռներու երկփեղկումին եւ սփիւռքի թեմերու բաժանումին:

Զարեհ Վեհափառի եօթնամեայ գահակալութեան շրջանը վիշտի ու մորմոքի տարիներ եղան: Եղիշէ պատրիարքի բառերով ՝՝ Իր կաթողիկոսութեան եօթը տարիները, հակառակ ուշագրաւ նուաճումներու, եօթը վէրքեր եղան, բացուած իր հոգիին մէջ... Պարագաներու անգութ ու դժնդակ բերումներու պատճառաւ, անիկա քալեց մեր ժողովուրդի իրեն համար պատրաստած խաչի ճամբայէն, եւ ինկաւ այդ ճամբուն վրայ՝ զարնուած իր սիրտէն՝՝:

Զարեհ Կաթողիկոս բարեսիրտ հովուապետ մըն էր: ՝՝Եթէ երբեք վերյիշենք ա՛յն դժուարին պայմանները, կը վկայէ Արտակ Արք., մասնաւորաբար ընտրութեան հետեւող շրջանները եւ ամէնէն պատասխանատու անձերու կեցուածքն ու արտայայտութիւնը, իր անձին, դիրքին եւ հեղինակութեան նկատմամբ եւ միւս կողմէ նկատի ունենանք իր անայլայլ կեցուածքը եւ բոլորին հետ ողջագուրուելու իր բարի տրամադրութիւնը, դարձեալ կը տեսնենք իր վեհ հոգին, լրջախոհութիւնը եւ հոգեւորականի անայլայլ կեցուածքն ու բարեսրտութիւնը՝՝:

Արմաշականներու դաստիարակութեամբ սնած կրօնական մեծ անձնաւորութիւն մըն էր Զարեհ ՍՔԱՆՉԵԼԻՆ: Եկեղեցական խոր գիտակցութեամբ թրծուած մաքրամաքուր այս կուսակրօնը, հաւատքով եւ համոզումով կը հետեւէր մեծ ՎԱՐԴԱՊԵՏին ուսուցումներուն, օրինատ դառնալով դպրեվանքցիներուն ու միաբաններուն: Վեհափառական իր շուքը ակնածանք կը պարտադրէր բոլորին: Անոր ներկայութեան կը զգայիր, թէ կը գտնուէիր Աստուծոյ պաշտօնեային դիմաց:

Երանաշնորհ Զարեհ Կաթողիկոսի յիշատակը յաւէտ վառ պիտի մնայ ժողովուրդին յիշողութեան մէջ, իբրեւ ամբասիր ու բարի Քահանայապետ, որովհետեւ աւետարանական բացատրութեամբ ան եղաւ ՝՝Այր յորում նենգութիւն ո՛չ գոյ՝՝:
