The attached are segments are translated from the book titled “Mattheos Eblighatian – A LIFE IN THE LIFE OF MY NATION – Eyewitness and Participant Testimonials 1903-1923". The book is the biography of Mattheos Eblighatian whose life spanned during a decisive period of our recent history. My cousin Jack Chelebian M.D., edited my translation.
Mattheos Eblighatian was born in 1881 and lived through a turbulent period of our history starting from the Ottoman Constitution, during which time he was appointed the prosecutor general in Van, being the first Armenian to have appointed to that position. Subsequently he was appointed to the European commission headed by the Norwegian general examiner Hoff. After the genocide he was appointed as the executive director for the Refugee Settlement and Republic of Armenia’s Director of Diaspora Affair but acted as the Republic’ ambassador. From there on he lived outside Turkey in Romania, Greece, Syria where he was appointed as the sole judge overseeing greater Lattakia, including Kessab where he had a residence built. He passed away on September 30, 1960.
His sons Melkon, a surgeon and a member of the Lebanese parlimanent, and Krikor, Attorney at Law who also served in the Syrian parliament, edited their father’s memoir and had it published in Antelias, Lebanon in 1987.
