The title of this blog is from a comment I extracted from Avo G Boghossian’s posting today on his Facebook page. Avo is formerly from Lebanon, but has settled in Armenia with his wife. I attached the translation of his posting below.
Armenia is experiencing a rich cultural life. The theaters are lively and performing almost every day. Concerts are diverse, from jazz to opera and classical music. The streets are full of people, local and foreign. Never before have so many foreign languages, especially English, been heard here. Restaurants and nightclubs, pubs and cafes are full of cheerful couples. It seems that people have nothing to do with politics.
Personally, I have often been in social circles where not everyone agrees on the issues facing the country, but there is generally goodwill towards each other. The same cannot be said about entering the Facebook platform. There, society is divided into different camps and there is an atmosphere of hostility towards each other. Why is it so…. For a simple reason. There is a clear and vain attempt by individuals to assert themselves, but the influence of algorithms is undeniable. It is not Facebook engineers who intentionally place or encourage an atmosphere of hatred. They have only created such a platform so that Facebook owners can earn as much money as possible. It is natural in the business world to have someone's writing or video to be viewed and followed a lot. Algorithm will make thigs visible and spread it to thousands or millions of people, thus leaving the impression that a single atmosphere, of hatred, is widespread.
It was precisely through this that Facebook first became a cause of concern in Myanmar a few years ago, I think in 2016, when the Buddhist mob and the army carried out a widespread and brutal rape and murder of about 800,000 Muslims in a few days against the Rohingya (Muslim minority) and eventually expelled them from the country. It all started with the kidnapping and murder of about two dozen Buddhists by an Islamic separatist group. The backlash was disproportionate and was purely a result of a few such brutal videos on Facebook that were spread in an unbalanced manner.
Let's prepare for the elections in a civilized manner, without hatred, respecting democratic laws. We are still building a new state. We must place the interests of Armenia above all else, above all parties and ideologies, because they are all changeable and adaptable over time. What remains must be the nation and, of course, the state, because without the latter, the nation cannot survive forever.
Հայաստանը կ՚ապրի մշակութային հարուստ կեանքով, թատերասրահները աշխոյժ են գրեթէ ամէն օր, համերգները բազմազան սկսեալ ճազէն մինչեւ օպերա եւ դասական երաժշտութիւն, փողոցները լիքը մարդկանցով՝ տեղացի եւ օտար. երբէք այսքան օտար լեզուներ լսուած չէր այստեղ ու մանաւանդ անգլերէնը: Ճաշարանները եւ գիշերային վայրերը՝ գինետունները եւ սրճարանները լի ուրախ զոյքերով: Այնպէս կը թուի թէ մարդիկ կապ չունին քաղաքականութեան հետ: Անձամբ յաճախ գտնուած եմ ընկերական շրջանակներու մէջ ուր ոչ բոլորն են միակարծիք երկրին առընչուող խնդիրներուն նկատմամբ, սակայն իրար հանդէպ ընդհանրապէս բարեացակամութիւն կը տիրէ: Նոյնը կարելի չէ ըսել Ֆէյսպուքի հարթակէն ներս մտնելու պարագային. այնտեղ հասարակութիւնը բաժնուած է տարբեր ճամբարներու եւ իրար հանդէպ թշնամական մթնոլորտ է: Թէ ինչու՞ է այդպէս…. Պարզ պատճառով միայն: Այնտեղ կայ անձերու ինքնահաստատման բացայայտ եւ սին փորձ, սակայն անժխտելիմէ ալկորիթմերու ազդեցութիւնը: Ֆէյսպուքի ճարտարագէտները չեն որ դիտաւորեալ կը տեղադրեն կամ կը քաջալերեն ատելութեան մթնոլորտը, անոնք միայն այնպիսի կոտաւորում ստեղծած են որ Ֆէյսպուքի սեփականատերերը շահին ինչքան շատ փող կարելի է, եւ այդ բնական է պիսնես աշխարհին մէջ, այնպէս որ կը բաւէ որ մէկու մը գրածը կամ ցուցադրած տեսաերիզը շատ դիտուի ու հետեւորդ ունենայ, այդքան շատ ալկորիթմը զայն պիտի տեսանելի դարձնէ ու տարածուի հազարաւոր կամ միլիոնաւոր մարդկանց շրջանակի տիրոյթին մէջ ու այդպէս տպաւորութիւն կը թողի որ համատարած է ատելութեան մթնոլորտը: Ճիշտ այս միջոցով էր որ առաջին անգամ ֆէյսը պատճառշդարձաւ Միանմարի մէջ մի քանի տարի առաջ՝ կարծեմ 2016 ին պուտիստ ամբոխի եւ բանակի կողմէն Րոհինկաներու ( իսլամ փոքրամասնութիւն ) դէմ համատարած ու մի քանի օրերու ընթացքին շուրջ 800000 իսլամներու դէմ ամենավայրագ բռնաբարումներու սպանութիւններու եւ ի վերջոյ անոնց երկրէն վտարումին: Ամէնը սկսած էր մօտ երկու տասնեակ պուտիստներու առեւանգման եւ սպանութեան դէպքերէն զոր կատարուած էր իսլամ անջատողական խմբաւորումի մը կողմէն: Հակադարձութիւնը անհամաչափ էր ու զուտ հետեւանք ֆէյսպուքի մէջ մի քանի այդպիսի վայրագ տեսանիւթերու որ անհակակակշիռ ձեւով տարածուած էր:
Պատրաստուինք ընտրութիւններուն քաղաքակրթորէն, առանց ատելութեան, ժողովրդավարական օրէնքները յարգելով: Դեռ նոր նոր պետութիւն կը կառուցենք: Հայաստանի շահերը ամէն բանէ վեր պէտք է դասենք, վեր բոլոր կուսակցութիւններէն, գաղափարախօսութիւններէն որովհետեւ անոնք բոլորը ժամանակի ընթացքին փոփոխական են ու ժամանակին յարմարուող: Մնայունը պէտք է ըլլայ ազգը եւ անպայմանօրէն պետութիւնը, որովհետեւ առանց վերջինին, ազգը յաւիտեան չի կրնար գոյատեւել:
