Kantsasar weekly is the Syrian Armenians’ news magazine and is published under the auspices of Prelacy of Aleppo. The attached is my translation of its last editorial for year that was posted on its Facebook page.Vahe H, Apelian
This year – 2022 - was marked by a steep economic decline and harsh living conditions in Syria.
Kantsasar was published in color even during the civil war in Syria. But during the past two years we started publishing it in black and white because the printing costs increased tenfold, consequently the printing of several state newspapers in the country ceased to be published. But considering the demand for the printed version of the newspaper, we tried to do our best to keep publishing it in a small number along its online publication.
The harsh conditions of the country affected the staff's moral as well. Providing for daily necessities became the main concern of the Syrian people due to the alarming climb of poverty because of devaluating currency. But thanks to our permanent and dedicated staff, whether the young journalists or the hardworking members of the editorial staff, the publication of the newspaper continued at the same pace, despite fuel shortages, long-term power outages, and slow Internet access.
The three-day training seminar to further the skill of our young journalists, which was organized in Kessab, contributed to the growth of journalistic and publishing interest, and further enriched the knowledge of those interested in journalism. Nevertheless, it is necessary to direct their interests to different areas in the field of journalism, so that they can gain experience and knowledge to gradually sharpen their pen, express couragely and objectivity.
We are sure that the field of journalism interests the youth. Along with interest, contributing to Kantsasar improves their language, develops their mind and pen. But above all, it opens an endless window for them looking at the Armenian world in front of them. Therefore, with continuous such programs, it is possible to prepare a qualified and capable cadre of journalists around Kantsasar.
This work is important especially taking into consideration the proportion of the young who leave the country. Those who gain experience and leave the country, leave a word. This way there will be a younger generation trained to fill the void they leave behind. If the upcoming generation is not prepared, in the coming years we will face manpower shortage. This phonemon does not pertain only to journalism but to all other aspects of our communal life.
We often speak about the restoration of the Syrian-Armenian community. The restoration, however, entails persistently pointing out the observed shortcomings of our community, daring to point out its defects, and suggesting remedies. Reconstruction does not entail erecting newer buildings alone. We need a new way of thinking that contributes to the development of various aspects of our national and communal life and getting rid of stereotypical thoughts and repetitious stands.
All of these can be realized when we critically examine our daily life and propose solutions through our press. Therefore, let us make this newspaper a forum for such discussions and welcome the New Year by opening the doors of this newspaper wide open to young writers and their fresh words.
Kantsasar will be stepping into the 30th year of its founding. The founders of the newspaper took this bold step to enrich our national and community life with intellectuals gathered around this forum, to shape their thought and thinking through the press and to make this newspaper the mirror that reflects the national, diocesan and the communal life of the Syrian Armenians.
We are facing difficult days in Syria, but we are committed to keep the 30-year uninterrupted march of Kantsasar, because we believe that it is the beating heart of the community.

ԽՄԲԱԳՐԱԿԱՆ՝ ԴԵԿՏԵՄԲԵՐ Դ./2022
ՏԱՐԻ ՄԸ ԵՒՍ ԲՈԼՈՐԵՑԻՆՔ
2022-ը Սուրիոյ մէջ յատկանշուեցաւ տնտեսական թաւալգլոր անկումով ու կենցաղային ծանր պայմաններով:
«Գանձասար» երբ պատերազմի պայմաններուն մէջ անգամ կը հրատարակուէր գունաւոր տպագրութեամբ, անցնող երկու տարիներուն սկսաւ հրատարակուիլ սեւ-ճերմակ տպագրութեամբ, որովհետեւ տպագրական ծախսերը տասնապատկուեցան ու երկրին մէջ նոյնիսկ պետական շարք մը թերթերու տպագրութիւնը դադրեցաւ անգամ:
Փորձեցինք մեր կարելին ընել որ առցանց հրատարակութեան կողքին, թէկուզ նուազ թիւով, պահենք թերթին տպագիր տարբերակը՝ նկատի ունենալով անոր պահանջը:
Թէեւ երկրի ծանր պայմանները ազդեցին աշխատակիցներու աշխոյժ թափին վրայ, օրապահիկի ապահովումը դարձաւ Սուրիոյ բնակչութեան հիմնական մտահոգութիւնը՝ նկատի ունենալով անտրամաբանականօրէն մագլցող սղաճը եւ սահմանափակ եկամուտները, սակայն ի պատիւ մեր մնայուն, նուիրեալ աշխատակիցներուն, երիտասարդ լրագրողներուն ու խմբագրակազմի ժրաջան անդամներուն, թերթի հրատարակութիւնը շարունակուեցաւ նոյն թափով՝ հակառակ վառելանիւթի տագնապին, ելեկտրականութեան երկարատեւ անջատումներուն եւ համացանցի տատամսոտ ընթացքին:
Երիտասարդ լրագրողներու վերապատրաստման եռօրեայ սեմինարը, որ կազմակերպուեցաւ Քեսապի մէջ, նպաստեց երիտասարդ տարրին լրագրական եւ հրապարակագրական հետաքրքրութեան աճին ու գիտելիքներու հարստացման: Այդուամենայնիւ, անհրաժեշտ է մղել այս տարրը լրագրութեան ասպարէզի տարբեր ոլորտներ, որպէսզի գիտելիքներուն կողքին փորձառութիւն ձեռք բերեն, աստիճանաբար զարգացնեն իրենց գրիչը, արտայայտուելու յանդգնութիւնն ու առարկայականութիւնը:
Համոզուած ենք, որ մամլոյ դաշտը կը հետաքրքրէ երիտասարդութիւնը: Հետաքրքրութենէն անդին, թերթին աշխատակցութիւնը կը բարելաւէ անոնց լեզուն, կը զարգացնէ միտքն ու գրիչը, բայց մանաւանդ հայաշխարհին նայող անծայրածիր պատուհան մը կը բանայ անոնց դիմաց:
Ուստի շարունակական ծրագիրներով կարելի կը դառնայ որակաւոր եւ ընդունակ կորիզի մը պատրաստութիւնը «Գանձասար»-ին շուրջ:
Այս աշխատանքը կարեւոր է յատկապէս նկատի ունենալով երկրէն հեռացող երիտասարդութեան համեմատութիւնը: Փորձառութիւն շահողը շրջան մը վերջ կը մեկնի ու կու գայ նորը: Եթէ չպատրաստուի նորը, յառաջիկայ տարիներուն կրնանք տագնապի առջեւ յայտնուիլ, եւ այս երեւոյթը կը վերաբերի ոչ միայն մամլոյ, այլեւ բոլոր մարզերուն:
Սուրիահայ համայնքի վերականգնումի մասին յաճախ կ'արտայայտուինք: Վերականգնումը, սակայն, կը պահանջէ արձանագրուող թերութիւններու յանդուգն մատնանշումներ, սրբագրումի առաջարկներ ու լուծումներ: Վերականգնումը միայն շէնքեր կառուցելով իր նպատակին չի ծառայեր: Անհրաժեշտ է ազգային ու միութենական կեանքի տարբեր ոլորտներու զարգացման նպաստող նոր մտածողութիւն, կաղապարուած միտքերէ, կրկնաբանութիւններէ ձերբազատում:
Այս բոլորը կրնան իրականանալ երբ քննական ակնոցով կը դիտենք մեր առօրեան ու սրբագրելու առաջարկներ կը ներկայացնենք նաեւ մամլոյ ճամբով:
Ուստի թերթը դարձնենք այս քննարկումներուն ազատ բեմը ու Նոր Տարին թեւակոխենք լայնօրէն բանալով դուռը երիտասարդ գրիչներու նոր խօսքին դիմաց:
«Գանձասար» այս տարի կը թեւակոխէ իր հիմնադրութեան 30-ամեակը: Թերթի հիմնադիրները այս յանդուգն քայլին դիմեցին ազգային ու համայնքային մեր կեանքը հարստացնելու մամլոյ շուրջ համախմբուող մտաւորականներով, միտք ու մտածողութիւն ձեւաւորելու մամլոյ ճամբով ու թերթը դարձնելու սուրիահայութեան ազգային, թեմական ու միութենական կեանքի հայելին:
Դժուար օրեր կը դիմագրաւենք Սուրիոյ մէջ, սակայն յանձնառու ենք պահելու 30-տարուան անխափան երթը «Գանձասար»-ին, որովհետեւ կը հաւատանք, որ թերթը համայնքին փափախող սիրտն է:
