Remembering Catholicos Khoren I

Catholicos Khoren I Paroyian (Armenian: Խորեն Ա. Բարոյան) was born in Nicosia, Cyprus on November 14, 1914. His baptismal name was Mesrob. His parents hailed from Kharpert. He was elected as Catholicos on May 12, 1963, after the death of Catholicos Zareh I. He died on February 10, 1983, at the age of 68.

Puzant Yeghiayan was an eminent educator, an author who taught at the Catholicos of Cilicia Seminary in Antelias, Lebanon for many years. He knew Catholicos Khoaren I of blessed memory since his days as a young seminarian he taught.

Attached is my difficult translation of Puzant’ Yeghiayan’s sentimental reflection about Catholicos Khoren I.

"I may be forgiven for taking the liberty for penning a few words in the exalted memory of Khoren Catholicos because I knew the Blessed Memory since the day he entered our seminary where, through his diligence, he was prepared to assume his great calling as a clergyman.  He was devoted to the Holy Shrine of the nation since his young age. His complete dedication to the people and his hands on approach for serving them became his hallmark through all the days of his life. 

He was still a young clergyman – vartabed -  when he did not hesitate to assume the heavy responsibility at the helm as the Vicar of the Deir El Zor region in Syria. He fulfilled that position with courage and competence and deservingly earned the love of the people.

Later on, when he was elected as the leader of the great Prelacy of Lebanon, a new person emerged in Bishop Khoren, as a reformer, a builder and as a clergyman with a practical mindset. He enlivened the Prelacy and enriched it with churches and schools, including two secondary schools.

After the death of Catholicos Karekin I (Hovsepian), Bishop Khoren was elected as the General Vicar and acted as the captain who marshalled the nation through the stormy weathers that lasted for three years until the election of the new Catholicos.

After the election of Catholicos Zareh I, Archbishop Khoren was appointed as the spiritual ambassador of the Catholicosate of Cilicia. He went around the world, from Iran to America, rejuvenating the diaspora communities. Wherever he went the impressed upon them and emphasized the need for establishing Armenian schools next to the churches.

After that fateful turning point, when Catholicos Zareh I, wounded in his heart, was martyred, the nation found solace in Archbishop Khoren I and found him worthy to carry the pontifical staff Catholicos Zareh I had left behind.

Since that day and for the next twenty years, Khoren Vehapar completely transformed the Catholicosate and made Antelias peaceful and prosperous. He brought freshness and revived the Armenian communities in the Diasporas. It is impossible to count and complete the list of the buildings and institutions he had built. No matter what money he asked for any project, the benefactors met his requests without hesitation for they knew whatever money they entrusted him, he had them put in good use with tangible results. 

Catholicos Khoren became an ardent supporter of the pan-Christian movement of his time. He elevated the standing of the Armenian Church in the world and had the just cause of the Armenians be known.

Undoubtedly the greatest desire of the Catholicos Khoren was the reunification and the effective cooperation between the two sovereign spiritual seats. He deeply believed that the Armenian church in the Diaspora has an irreplaceable mission, which the Catholicosate of Cilicia is called to carry in consultation with Saint Etchmiadzin, especially for preparing newer generations of servants to the Armenian church through the seminary.

Thus, with his belief in the wholesomeness of the Armenian nation and his personality, Catholicos Khoren I of blessed memory became an apostolic patriarch in the history of our time.

During his last years, the unfortunate political storms of Lebanon added further burden on his declining health. Aware of his condition, Catholicos Khoren had the wisdom to choose and anoint with his own hand, the most gracious Karekin II as Catholicos Coadjutor to assure the durability and the mission of the saintly seat (note: 1977). But what a luck! Providence did not allow him more time to enjoy his later years in tranquility.

In his last letter, in November, he wrote: "It's been almost five months, a lot of things happened to me. Presently, it is the difficulty to speak... I am very tired." And he enumerated the difficulties and added writing: "Unwanted things happened because I am committed to the service of the Armenian people." 

He lived with the vow he took to serve the Armenian people and he passed away on the path of that vow. May his good memory be eternally blessed.” (The source and the original quote is cited below.)

Catholicos Khoren was a friend to my parents. The posted picture is his official photograph personalized to my parents in red ink which was his hallmark signature. 

The prelacy, the Cathedral of Saint Nshan and its namesake school I attended were in the same campus. During my elementary years, he would see me going home after school and he would pay special attention to me. In 1962, I graduated from Sourp Nshan middle school. Archbishop Khoren presided over the graduation ceremony as the prelate. A year later, in 1963, he was elected Catholicos. Henceforth, during major holidays, we, as a family, would pay homage to him after the mass. He would greet each one of us by name. But it was not only us, but also all those who were there, in what was called as achahampuyr (աջաճամբոյր)– kissing the right hand of the Catholicos.  He appeared to have an uncanny ability to remember names.

When Gabriel Injejikian announced that upon his return to the U.S., he will be opening an Armenian day school, his announcement was viewed with skepticism and even ridicule. During those years, having an Armenian day school in the U.S. was considered an impossible task. Gabriel had promissory notes issued. Those who signed, promised to live up to their promise and donate the amount they have indicated after Gabriel lived up to his promise and opened the school. I, along with my high school classmates, had signed these promissory notes as well. His nephew, Vicken was our classmate. I asked Gabriel once what happened to those promissory notes. He said he lost the box where he had saved them and added that his only regret was losing the first promissory note signed by Catholicos Khoren I. Furthermore,  Gabriel reminiscing noting that the Catholicos had signed the first promissory note with his red ink pen.

ԲԻՒԶԱՆԴ ԵՂԻԱՅԵԱՆ՝ ԽՈՐէՆ ԿԱԹՈՂԻԿՈՍԻ ՄԱՍԻՆ«Բարի յիշատակի քանի մը խօսքարտասանելու իմ համարձակութիւնս ներելի ըլլաr թերեւս անով որ, Լուսահոգին ճանցած եմ մերԴպրեվանքը մուտք գործած օրէն ի վեր, ուր ուսումնական ժրաջանութեամբը պատրաստուեցաւհոգեւորականի մեծ կոչումին եւ իր մատղաշ տարիքին ընծայուեցաւ ազգի սուրբխորանին։Լուսահոգիին նկարագրի ցայտուն յատկանիշը կեանքի բոլոր օրերուն եղաւամբողջական նուիրում եւ գործնական ծառայութիւն ժողովուրդին։

Յետոյ, երբ Լիբանանի մեծ թեմին Առաջնորդ ընտրուեցաւ, Խորէն Եպիսկոպոսին մէջ յայտնուեցաւնոր անձ մը՝ բարեկարգիչ շինարարը, գործնական միտքի տէր հոգեւորականը՝ Ան շինեց շէնցուցԼիբանանի Առաջնորդարանը, թեմի տասնեակ մը եղեղեցիները եւ դպրոցները, որոնց կարգիներկու երկրորդական վարժարաններ։ Ու երբ Գարեգին Կաթողիկոսի վախճանումին յաջորդող երեքտարիներուն վրայ հասան ազգային եկեղեցական տագնապի օրերը, Խորէն Եպիսկոպոս այսանգամ Ընդհանուր Տեղապահ ընտրուած եղաւ փոթորիկներուն իշխող նաւապետը։

Զարեհ Կաթողիկոսի ընտրութիւնէն յետոյ Խորէն Արքեպիսկոպոս կոչուեցաւ նոր առաքելութեան մըհոգեւոր դեսպանութեան։ իբր կաթողիկոսական նուիրակ՝ ան շրջեցաւ աշխարհէ աշխարհ, Իրանէնմինչեւ Ամերիկա, հայ եկեղեցւոյ զաւակները վերախմբեց, խանդաւարեց, ամէն տեղ շեշտելով Հայեկեղեցւոյ կողքին հայ դպրոց հաստատելու անհրաժեշտութիւնը։ Ու ճակատագրականդարձակետին, երբ իր սրտէն զարնուած զոհուեցաւ Զարեհ Կաթողիկոս, անոր ձեռքէն ինկածմանկանը վերցնելու համար մեր ացգը իր մխիթարութիւնը գտաւ միայն արժանայաջորդ Խորէնկաղողիկոսին մէջ։ Այն օրէն ի վեր, քսան տարի Խորէն Վեհաբառ բոլորովին կերպանափոխուած,բարեշէն ու բարգաւաճ դարձուցած է Անթիլիասը, թարմութիւն ու վերածաղկում բերած է ՍփիւռքիՀայ գաղութներուն։ Կարելի չէ թուել ու լրացնել շարքը իր կատարած շէնքերուն ու հաստատութեանց։Ինչ ծրագիրի համար ինչ գումար որ ան խնդրեց՝ ացնիւ բարերաներ անվարան ընդհառաջեցին,որովհետեւ վստահ եղան թէ ինչ լումայ ձգէին անոր գանձանակը անմիջապէս շօշափելի բարիքի մըպիտի վերածուէր։

Խորէն Կաթողիկոս եղաւ նաե ներկայ ժամանակներու համա-քրիստոնէական շարժումի ջերմջատագովը, կաթողիկոսարանի փոխյարաբերութեանց ճամբով ան բարձրացուց Հայ Եկեղեցւոյվարկը միջազգային շրջանակներու մէջ, ճանցուց Հայ ժողովուրդի արդար դատը, պահանջքը։Անտարակոյս Խորէն Կաթողիկոսի բարձրագոյն բաղձանքը եղաւ Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ նուիրապետականՍ. Աթոռներու վերամիացումը եւ արդիւնաւոր Համագործակցութիւնը։ Ան խորապէս հաւատացողէր, թէ Սփիւռքի մէջ Հայ Եկեղեցին անփոխարինելի առաքելութիւն մը ունի, զոր Ս.Էջմիածինի հետհամախորհուրդ կատարելու կոչուած է Կիլիկիոյ Կաթողիկոսութիւնը, մանաւանդ նոր մշակներպատրաստելու իր Դպրեվանքով։ Այսպէս Հայութեան ամբողջականութեան հաւատքով ունկարագրով Խորեն երաշնորհ Կաթողիկոսը եղաւ մեր ժամանակից պատմութեան մէջառաքելատիպ Հայրապետ՝ ճշմարիտ, խոնարհ, բայց տիրական։Իր վերջին տարիներուն,Լիբանանի  դժբախտ քաղաքական փոթորիկներւ մէջ, իր սպառող առողջութեանը գիտակից, անարթուն իմաստութիւնը ունեցաւ իր իսկ ձեռքով ընտրելու եւ օծելու բազմաշնորհ Տ.Տ. Գարեգին Բ.աթոռակից Կաթողիկոսը, ապահովելու Ս. Աթոռին առաքելութեան տեւականութիւնը։Եւ Ի՞նչ բախտ՝նախախնամութիւնը իրեն ժամանակ չտուաւ աւելի երկար վայելելու իր կեանքի երջանիկխաղաղութիւնը։ Վերջին նամակին մէջ, Նոյեմբերին, կը գրէր. «Այսօր շուրջ հինգ ամիս է, շատ մըբաներ անցան գլուխէս։ Այժմ խօսելու դժուարութիւնն է….Շատ յոգնած եմ»։ Ու կը թուէրդժուարութիւնները  եւ կաւելցնէր. «կը պատահին ասանկ բաներ՝ քանի որ հայ ժողովուրդիծառայութեան լծուած եմ»։ Ան ապրեցաւ Հայ Ժողովուրդին ծառայելու ուխտով, վախճանեցաւ այդուխտի ճամբուն վրայ։ Մշտավառ ըլլայ իր բարի յիշատակին կանթեղը։Օգոստոս 10, 1987 թ.  Պոսթոն (Ժիրայր Ղարիկեան՝ «Հայրենիքս, Հայրենակիցներս, ես»
