The Turkish incursion in Syria along its long border reminded of the fate of the Armenian Islamic tribe the late Kevork George Apelian had uncovered and reported in 2011. I wondered about the 25,000 strong Armenian Islamic Tribe he wrote about. They are descendants of the Genocide survivors who were assimilated and converted into Islam but retained the bond with their roots and formed a legalized distinct tribe, according the local customs.
There is renewed interest in the Armenian Islamic Tribe of the region.
On June 23, 2025, Dr. Karena Avedissian, on Civilnetr, shared her recent visit to the same region that is at the present known Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, where she met with Islamized Armenians, and reported about them.
On Sunday September 20, 2026, she will share her experiences with the Islamized Armenians in a webinar organized by Dr. Herand Markarian on behalf of the NY Hamazkayin Chapter.
