Poet Jaques Hagopian

Attached is the translation and the original piece from November 4, 2019 posting on KANTSASAR Facebook page about poet Jaques Hagopian who passed away on November 2, 2019 at the ripe age of 102. Per his request his funeral will be attended only by his family members. He was a favorite poet of my mother. I have also posted one of his poems she had copied 

Jaques S. Hagopian was born on August 1, 1917, in Jerusalem. His parents were Stepan Hagopian (born in Adapazar) and Srpouhy (born in Jerusalem). At the age of two, the family moved to Cairo, Egypt where he received his education in the following schools

- Puzant-Alice Varjabedian Kindergarten (Բիւզանդ-Ալիս Վարժապետեան (մանկապարտէզ, 1922-24)

– Kaloustian National School (Գալուստեան Ազգային Վարժարան, 1924-29)

–  Berberian College (Պէրպէրեան Քոլէժ, 1929-34)

– Collège Des Frères (Khoronfish, Baccalaurèat – sèrie mathèmatiques, 1935-37)

– He received his University education in theFaculté Française de Médecine – École de Pharmacie, (1937-39).  

World War II broke in 1939, as a result of which he continued his education in the School of Pharmacy of the University of Cairo (1939-1942), completing his pharmacy education. In compliance with the Egyptian laws, he devoted the next two years in his study of Arabic and Arabic literature and after passing the required examinations he qualified as a pharmacist in 1944. Throughout those two years of study, he worked in a French company called Lebon Gas. Subsequently, he completes his mandatory military training from 1944-1946.

In 1947 he married Azadouhy Sevyonkian (Ազատուհի Սեւյօնքեան), who was the granddaughter of Archbishop Vramshabouh Kebarian (the prelate of France and Belgium, and the clergy who married General Antranig and the clergy depicted in ArpiarnArpiarian’s “Red (Sunday) Offering”  («Կարմիր Ժամուց» novel.)

Two years later the couple immigrated to Australia (Melbourne). After a year they returned to Cairo where he worked as a pharmacist in different pharmacies. In 1956, along with their young children, they immigrated to Beirut, Lebanon where they settle down and had their fourth child.

From 1957 to 1965 he taught Armenian language, history, and literature in Genats Secondary School (Կենաց Երկրորդական Վարժարան ) in Dbaya, a suburb of Beirut.

In 1965 the family immigrated to Australia (Melbourne) for the second time.

In 1967 he immigrated to the U.S. with his family settling in Pasadena, California.

For the next 21 years (1967-88) he worked as a chemist in Life Laboratories, in Sun Valley.

Along with his pharmacy career, he taught in Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School (Սահակ-Մեսրոպ Հայ Քրիստոնեայ Վարժարանը, 1988-2000).

For a short while, he taught Armenian literature in the Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Secondary School.

Along with his career, he has taught in Sunday school under the jurisdiction of the Armenian Apostolic Church, in Cairo-Heliopolis (1951-1953) and Encino, California (2003-2009).

In 1974 he started Bible study first in the houses of faithful in Hollywood, then in a hall in the Baptist Church, and eventually in the Holy Mother of God Armenian Apostolic Church in Glendale (Սուրբ Աստուածածին Եկեղեցի). 

In 1975 he embarked on his evangelical endeavor that lasted for 10 years, until 1985. He founded 15 minutes long weekly evangelical broadcast calling it “The Light of World, Armenian Evangelical Hour”. 

Along with his books, he has produced Armenian spiritual cassettes titling “Scent of Jesus”(«Յիսուսաբոյր», and “The Armenian Soul” («Հոգին հայկական») and others.

Along with in Armenian, he had also written poetry in French and had participated in French literary competitions  (Jeux Floraux du Languedoc, 1936, Toulouse):

In 1938, his first literary work “Secret Passage” «Գաղտնի ճամբան», caught the attention of the eminent Armenian literary educator, critic and author Nigol Aghpalian and Jaques Hagopian became his literary discovery. He has authored 35 books and booklets both in poetry and in prose. Many of them have received First Prizes.

Expressed in an elegant Armenian, his nationalistic soul and fervent faith defined his inner world and his literary works. His literary language is in Western Armenian, in a rich and with a magnificent and ornate vocabulary. 

Jaque Hagopian has authored “The Crane is Calling” («Կռունկը կը կանչէ») play that has been staged hundreds of times in different cities of the Diaspora, mostly by the Hamazkayin “Kaspar Ipegian theater group under the direction of Georges Sarkissian.

Catholicos Karekin II of Blessed Memory and Aram I Catholicos of the Catholicosate of Cilicia (Sis), bestowed upon him ecclesiastical decrees

Hamazkayin's Educational and Cultural Association has bestowed upon him the highest honor stating:  “We hereby affirm that Jaques Hagopian with his literary legacy has had a significant impact on the Armenian literature and with his relentless literary pursuit has served for the betterment of the Armenian culture.”

Ժագ Ս. Յակոբեան ծնած է 1 Օգոստոս 1917-ին, Երուսաղէմ, Ստեփան Յակոբեան (ատափազարցի) եւ Սրբուհի (երուսաղէմցի) ամոլէն: Երկու տարեկանին ծնողքին հետ կը տեղափուխուի Գահիրէ, Եգիպտոս: Ուսումն ու կրթութիւնը կը ստանայ յաջորդաբար հետեւեալ դպրոցներուն մէջ.

– Բիւզանդ-Ալիս Վարժապետեան (մանկապարտէզ, 1922-24)

– Գալուստեան Ազգային Վարժարան (1924-29)

– Պէրպէրեան Քոլէժ (1929-34)

1939-ին կը ծագի Համաշխարհային Երկրորդ պատերազմը, որուն պատճառաւ կը ստիպուի իրդեղագործական ուսումը շարունակել Գահիրէի պետական համալսարանի School of Pharmacy-ին մէջ (1939-42), ուր կ’աւարտէ իր դեղագործական ուսումը 1942-ին:

Եգիպտական օրէնքի մը համաձայն, ան պարտաւորութիւնը կ’ունենայ անցընելու արաբերէն Պաքալորեայի համազօր երկու քննութիւն՝ արաբերէն լեզու եւ արաբական գրականութիւն, զորս ինքնաշխատութեամբ յաջողութեամբ կ’անցընէ եւ ձեռք կը ձգէ դեղագործական վկայականը 1944-ին:

Արաբերէնի քննութեանց պատրաստութեան շրջանին, ան միաժամանակ կը գործէ ֆրանսական Lebon Gas-ի ընկերութեան մէջ:

Այնուհետեւ, իր պարտադիր զինուորական ծառայութիւնը կը կատարէ Վերին Եգիպտոսի մէջ (1944-46):

1947-ին կ’ամուսնանայ Ազատուհի Սեւյօնքեանին հետ, որ թոռնուհին էր Վռամշապուհ Արք. Քիպարեանի (առաջնորդ Ֆրանսայի եւ Պելճիքայի՝ Զօրավար Անդրանիկը պսակողը եւ ԱրփիարԱրփիարեանի «Կարմիր Ժամուց»ին «ղարիպ տէրտէր»ը):

Երկու տարի ետք, նորապսակ զոյգը կը գաղթէ Աւստրալիա (Մելպըռն): Տարի մը ետք կը վերադառնայ Գահիրէ, ուր կ’աշխատի որպէս դեղագործ զանազան դեղարաններու մէջ: 1956-ին տիկնոջ եւ երեք անչափահաս զաւակներուն հետ կը գաղթէ Պէյրութ, Լիբանան, ուր կայք կը հաստատէ, եւ ուր կը ծնի իր չորրորդ զաւակը:

1957-էն 1965 կը պաշտօնավարէ Կենաց Երկրորդական Վարժարանին մէջ (Տպպայա), որպէս ուսուցիչ հայ լեզուի, հայ գրականութեան եւ ազգային պատմութեան:

1965-ին երկրորդ անգամ կը գաղթէ Աւստրալիա (Մելպըռն):

1967-ին կը գաղթէ Ամերիկա վերջնականապէս, ուր բնակութիւն կը հաստատէ Քալիֆորնիոյ Փասատինա քաղաքին մէջ:

Ի միջի այլոց, ան ամբողջ 21 տարի (1967-88), աշխատած է որպէս քիմիագէտ դեղորայքի գործարանի մէջ՝ Life Laboratories (Sun Valley).

Իր դեղագործական ասպարէզին կողքին, իր ուսուցչական գործունէութիւնը կ’ընդգրկէ նաեւ Սահակ-Մեսրոպ Հայ Քրիստոնեայ Վարժարանը (1988-2000):

Կարճ ժամանակ մը, ան եղած է նաեւ հայ գրականութեան դասատու Սրբոց Նահատակաց Ֆերահեան Երկրորդական վարժարանին մէջ:

Իր ասպարէզին կողքին, կը պաշտօնավարէ նաեւ որպէս ուսուցիչ կիրակնօրեայ դպրոցներու մէջ Հայաստանեայց Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյ հովանիին տակ՝ Գահիրէ-Հելիոպոլիս (1951-1953) եւ Էնսինօ, Քալիֆորնիա (2003-2009):

1974-ին կը սկսի Աստուածաշունչի սերտողութեան ժողովներու՝ նախ հաւատացեալներու բնակարաններու մէջ, սկսեալ Հոլիվուտէն, ապա Հոլիվուտի մէկ Baptist Church-ի սրահին մէջ, հուսկ ապա Կլենտէյլի Սուրբ Աստուածածին Եկեղեցիին գմբէթին տակ, հովանաւորութեամբը Հայաստանեայց Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյն:

1975-ին կը ձեռնարկէ նաեւ անձնական աւետարանչական գործունէութեան մը, որ կը տեւէ տասը տարի, մինչեւ 1985: Կը հաստատէ 15 վայրկեաննոց շաբաթական աւետարանչական ռատիօժամ մը՝ «Աշխարհի Լոյսը, Հայաստանեայց Աւետարանասփռումի ժամ», սուրբ գրային եւ ազգային բովանդակութեամբ:

Գիրքերու կողքին, ան հրապարակ հանած է նաեւ հոգեշունչ եւ հայաշունչ ձայներիզներ(«Յիսուսաբոյր», «Հոգին հայկական» եւ այլն):

Հայերէնի կողքին, ան գրած է նաեւ ֆրանսերէն քերթուածներ, որոնցմով ան մասնակցած է ֆրանսական գրական մրցումներու (Jeux Floraux du Languedoc, 1936, Toulouse):

1938-ին, Ժագ Յակոբեան «Գաղտնի ճամբան» անդրանիկ իր հատորով՝ գրաքննադատ Նիկոլ Աղբալեանի գրական «գիւտ»ը կը դառնայ: Հեղինակն է շուրջ 35 գիրքերու եւ գրքոյկներու, բանաստեղծութիւն եւ արձակ: Իր գործերէն ոմանք արժանացած են Առաջին Մրցանակի:

Գեղեցիկ հայերէնով մը արտայայտուած իր ազգայնաշունչ հոգին եւ վառ հաւատքը կը հիւսեն թէ՛ իր ներաշխարհը եւ թէ գրաշխարհը: Իր գործածած գրական-գեղարուեստական լեզուն արեւմտահայերէնն է՝ շքեղ եւ ճոխ բառապաշարով:

Ժագ Յակոբեան հեղինակած է նաեւ «Կռունկը կը կանչէ» թատերախաղը, որ արժանացած է հարիւրէ աւելի ներկայացումներու Սփիւռքի զանազան քաղաքներու մէջ, նախաձեռնութեամբ առաւելաբար Համազգայինի «Գասպար Իփէկեան» թատերախումբին, առաջնորդութեամբ բեմադրիչ Ճորճ Սարգիսեանի:

Երկու տարբեր առիթներով, ան կը պարգեւատրուի Կաթողիկոսական շքանշաններով՝ ձեռամբ Գարեգին Բ.-ի եւ Արամ Ա.-ի:

Ան արժանացած է «Համազգային»ի մշակութային բարձրագոյն շքանշանին, հետեւեալ գնահատականով. «Այսու կը հաստատենք, թէ Ժագ Յակոբեան գրական իր վաստակով կարեւոր ներդրում բերած է հայ գրականութեան եւ իր տեւական ծառայութեամբ նպաստած է հայ մշակոյթի հարստացման»:

Ժագ Յակոբեան ունեցած է բեղուն աշխատանք, ստորեւ կը ներկայացնենք իր հրատարակած գիրքերը.
