Gregory Petros XY Agagianian, The Great Benefactor of Kessab

During my childhood, I would see his picture placed in our home but I did not have the capacity to understand who was the person depicted in the picture.  I thought of him as a "great person" although he did not have the expected stern and boastful looks of "great" men. Instead, I saw the looks of a good and a kind person stamped with an angelic smile.

Every summer, right after the ending of the school for the year, we would depart to Kessab, our ancestral village, to spend our summer long sojourn there. There also I would see the same picture of that "great" person placed in a metal box along with the pictures of others who surely were dear to us. 

I liked to look at those pictures. All of them were in black and white. I would carefully pick each picture and look at it without knowing about the persons depicted in those pictures. One day my father happened to be next to me while I looking at the pictures. I asked him who the "great" man was?  My father's face brightened radiating pride. "Son", he said, "He is our Agagianian" and gave me a brief introduction about the person. 

My father's radiating face beaming with pride told me a lot about the person, especially that my father was a contemporary of that great man and had been a witness of his works and had been a beneficiary of his goodness. I felt that my father exhibited an air of pride to have enjoyed the great man's fatherly concern and care and reciprocated it with profound love and gratitude much like an appreciative son would do.

How could my father not feel pride and gratitude towards the person, especially that he had intimate knowledge and been a witness of the events that took place in the 1930s of the preceding century? These events could have had a lasting adverse effect on Kessab had there not been the effective intervention of the late Cardinal Agagianian of blessed memory.

During 1933 the colonial French, behind closed doors, was laying down the issue of annexing the Sanjak of Alexandretta to Turkey. In those days Kessab was part of the Sanjak. The French were courting the Turkish assistance against Nazi Germany when Europe unmistakably was heading towards the second Great War.

Sensing the great danger that awaited Kessab, the religious leaders of the religious denominations of Kessab, who were Armenians, petitioned the Catholicos-Patriarch Avedis Petros XIV Arpiarian (1931-1937) to intercede the French colonial rulers on their behalf and disassociate Kessab from the Sanjak of Alexandretta issue and have it annexed to the province of Lattakia, Syria, instead. The Patriarch Catholicos received assurance from the French colonial rules that such rumors were baseless. Unfortunately, the promises of great powers are deceptive when it comes to issues they consider to be to their best interests, dismissing the well being of the peoples involved.

On June 1939, France and Turkey signed their ill-reputed agreement conceding Sanjak to Turkey. My father recounted those days telling that after the signing of the agreement teaching the Turkish language in the Kessab schools, which were all Armenian, became mandatory.

Gregory Petros XV Agagianian (1937-1962) (Գրիգոր Պետրոս ՃԵ Աղաճանեան) was elected Catholicos-Patriarch in 1937. He did not remain idle at the prospect of the displacement of the Kessabtsis from Kessab because of the annexation. He took upon himself to remedy the course. He secured the support of local religious leaders and applied to the Pope Pope Pius XI (1922-1939) asking him to intercede with the French Government on behalf of the Kessabtsis in Kessab. Thanks to his persistence, Cardinal Agagianian succeeded in his mission. When France ratified the agreement in June 1939, Kessab was removed from the Sanjak and incorporated into the province of Lattakia as petitioned by the Kessabtsis. The following month in July, the Turkish soldiers left the area and teaching Turkish in the schools was discontinued.

Cardinal Aghaganian of blessed memory recalled the event in his 1947 pastoral decree where he noted the support of the Apostolic religious leaders in Lebanon for having the Armenian inhabited Kessab spared from deportation and having Kessab incorporated into the Syrian Republic.

Kessabtsis retained in their memories the liberation of Kessab and in 1947 a delegation from Kessab paid homage to the beloved Cardinal by visiting him in the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate in Beirut. Upon receiving the delegation, the Cardinal promised them to pay a pastoral visit to Kessab as a token of his love and support.

In August 1948, the Cardinal paid a five days long pastoral visit to Kessab. The Kessabtsis overwhelingly enthusiastically welcomed the great benefactor into the last remnant of the ancestral Cilicia. 

In 1995, on the 100th anniversary of deceased Patriarch's birthday, the Kessabtsis wanted to have their gratitude enshrined. Under Father Mesrob Djourian's initiative they had an inscription dedicated to the Cardinal placed on the premises of Saint Michael's Armenian Catholic Church in Kessab under the auspices of Patriarch Catholicos of Blessed Memory John Petros XVIII Kasparian (1982–1999) (Յովաննէս Պետրոս ԺԸ. Գասպարեան).  Many Syrian Government dignitaries and Kessabtis attended the unveiling of the inscription that captured for history Cardinal Aghaganian's historic contribution for the preservation of the Armenian inhabited Kessab.

The Syrian Government also expressed its appreciation of the Cardinal Aghajanian's contribution by having the President Shukri El Quwatli personally bestow upon the late Cardinal the Syrian Government's highest order.

Presently Catholicos Patriarch Krikor Bedros XX Gabroyan (2015–present) (Գրիգոր Պետրոս Ի. Կապրոյեան) is spearheading the drive to have Cardinal Agagianian sanctified. The Cardinal Agagianian’s good deeds are too many and go far beyond the Armenian Catholic community for the benefit the universal church, sanctified.

Kessab, in turn, supports these efforts. The archpriest Father Nareg Louisian is planning to have the bust of the Cardinal Agagianian placed on the premises of the Saint Michael Armenian Catholic Church in Kessab to have the memory of the great benefactor of Kessab visibly preserved for all generations.

ՔԵՍԱՊԻ ՄԵԾ ԲԱՐԵՐԱՐԸ՝ ԿԱՐՏԻՆԱԼ ԱՂԱՃԱՆԵԱՆ

Փոքր տարիքիս,Պէյրութի մեր բնակարանին մէջ, անկիւն մը դրուած,կը տեսնէի անոր լուսանկարը, առանց կարողանալ գիտնալու թէ ո՞վ էր այդ լուսանկարին մէջ պատկերուած անձնաւորութիւնը,որը կը թուէր ինծի ըլլալ «Մեծ» անձ մը, առանց ունենալու «Մեծ» մարդոց խոժոր դէմքի եւ յոխորտացող նայուածքի արտայայտութիւնը.անոր դէմքին վրայ կը տեսնէի բարութիւն մը եւ հրեշտականման ժպիտ մը դրոշմուած:

Երբ ամէն ամառ,դպրոցներու փակումէն անմիջապէս ետք,կը մեկնէինք Քեսապ՝մեր պապենական գիւղը,հոն անցընելու ամառնային արձակուրդը,այնտեղ նոյնպէս կը տեսնէի այդ «Մեծ»ին նոյն լուսանկարը ,զետեղուած այլ յարգի նկարներու հետ,յատուկ մետաղեայ տուփի մը մէջ:

Կը սիրէի դիտել յաճախ այդ պատկերները,բոլորն ալ սեւ եւ ճերմակ,ուշադրութեամբ կը վերցնէի զանոնք,հետաքրքրութեամբ կը դիտէի,երբեմն առանց ճանչնալու անոնց մէջ պատկերուծ անձերը:Օր մըն ալ զանոնք դիտած ատեն,հարց տուի կողքս նստած հօրս,հարցնելով «Մեծ» մարդուն մասին,գիտնալու անոր ինքնութիւնը:Հօրս դէմքը պայծառացաւ եւ հպարտ շեշտով մը պատասխանեց ըսելով.«Այս մեր Աղաճանեանն է տղաս»,տալով անոր մասին հակիրճ բացատրութիւն մըն ալ:

Ինչե՜ր,ինչե՜ր չկային հօրս արտասանած այդ երեք բառերուն մէջ.հպարտութիւն ի հարկէ,մանաւանդ ապրած ըլլալով այդ «Մեծ»ին ժամանակաշրջանին,ականատեսը եղած անոր կատարած մեծ գործերուն եւ վայելած անոր բարիքները:Զգացի որ հայրս պարծանքն ունի վայելելած ըլլալու այդ հայրապետին հայրական հոգատարութիւնն ու անհուն սէրը եւ ունէր անոր հանդէպ երախտապարտ զաւակի զգացումները:

Եւ ինչպէս հայրս չըլլար հպարտ,չըլլար երախտապարտ,ըլլալով քաջատեղեակ եւ նոյնիսկ վկան՝ այն դէպքերուն որ տեղի կ'ունենային նախորդ դարու երեսունական թուականներուն եւ այդ դէպքերը կրնային ունենալ շատ ծանր հետեւանքներ եթէ չըլլար երջանկայիշատակ Կարտինալ Աղաճանեանի անմիջական եւ ազդու միջամտութիւնը:

Արդարեւ 1933 թուականէն կ'արծարծուէր Սանճագի հարցը եւ զայն Թուրքիոյ կցելու ֆրանսական փորձերը միջազգային գաղտնի վարագոյրներուն ետին: Այդ օրերուն Քեսապը մաս կը կազմէր Սանճագի նահանգին: Ֆրանսայի ակնկալութիւնն էր սիրաշահիլ Թուրքիան եւ ապահովել անոր բարեկամութիւնը նացիական Գերմանիոյ դէմ ,երբ արդէն եւրոպային կը սպառնար համաշխարհային երկրորդ պատերազմի մը անխուսափելիութիւնը:

Այդ թուականներուն՝ նախազգալով վտանգը,Քեսապի քոյր համայնքներու հոգեւոր պետերը նամակ կը յղեն հայ կաթողիկէ պատրիարք՝երջանկայիշատակ Արփիարեան կաթողիկոսին , որ իր հեղինակութեամբ միջամտէ ֆրանսական հոգատար պետութեան մօտ ,որ Քեսապը անջատուի Սանճագի նահանգէն եւ միացուի Լաթաքիոյ նահանգին:Պատրիարքարանը ֆրանսական իշխանութիւններէն կը ստանայ ապահովութիւնը թէ այդ կասկածները անհիմն են:Բայց դժբախտաբար ինչպէս միշտ,մեծ պետութիւններու սեփական շահերը գերադաս են մարդկանց իրաւունքներուն եւ անոնց խոստումները միշտ խաբուսիկ:

1939-ի Յունիսին կը կնքուի այդ տխրահռչակ համաձայնութիւնը Թուրքիոյ եւ Ֆրանսայի միջեւ:

Հայրս կը պատմէր յիշելով այդ օրերը եւ կ՛ըսէր.«Քեսապի վարժարաններուն մէջ սկսաւ թրքերէն լեզու դասաւանդուիլ»:

1937-ին կաթողիկոս ընտրուած էր Գրիգոր Պետրոս ԺԵ Աղաճանեան:Ան ձեռնածալ չէր կրնար մնալ ի տես այդ կատարուած սադրանքին,որուն մէջ կը տեսնուէր տեղահանութեան հեռանկարը:

Հայրապետը կը լծուի գործի:

Կը դիմէ ֆրանսական հոգատար իշխանութեան պատասխանատուներուն:Անոր կ'աջակցի Սուրիոյ եւ Լիբանանի մօտ առաքելական նուիրակ`Ռէմի Լը Փրէթր :Նամակ կը գրեն Պիոս ԺԲ պապին եւ կը խնդրեն անոր ազդու միջամտութիւնը Ֆրանսական կառավարութեան մօտ: Պապը Ֆրանսայի առաքելական նուիրակին միջոցաւ կը հասցնէ խնդրանքը Ֆրանսական պետութեան եւ յաջողութեամբ կը պսակուի կարտինալ Աղաճանեանի պահանջքը:1939-ի Յունիսին երբ պաշտօնական կերպով կը ստորագրուի համաձայնագիրը Ֆրանսայի եւ Թուրքիոյ միջեւ ,Քեսապը նախ կ'անջատուի Սանճագէն,կը կապուի Լաթաքիոյ նահանգին եւ թուրք բանակայինները կը հեռանան Քեսապէն եւ շրջակայ գիւղերէն նոյն տարուայ Յուլիսին:

Երջանկայիշատակ Աղաճանեան հոգեւոր տէրը կը յիշէ այս դէպքերը իր 1947-ի կոնդակին մէջ.«Սրբազան քահանայապետին,ազդու միջամտութեամբ որուն պատճառ եղան Սուրիոյ եւ Լիբանանի առաքելական նուիրակութիւնն ու պատրիարքարանս,խնայեց Քեսապի հայաբնակ եւ սիրելի շրջանին՝գաղթականութեան աղէտը:Քեսապ մնաց կապուած Սուրիոյ հանրապետութեան»:

Քեսապի այս ազատագրութեան յիշատակը Քեսապցիները վար պահած էին իրենց մտքերուն եւ սրտերուն մէջ.ունէին երախտագիտական զգացում մը յայտնելու մեծ փափաքը,զոր իրագործեցին 1947-ին տալով խմբային այցելութիւնը Աղաճանեան հոգեւոր տիրոջ Պէյրութի հայ կաթողիկէ պատրիարքարան:Կարտինալը ընդունելէ եւ լսելէ ետք Քեսապի հաւատացեալները,կը խոստանայ անձամբ այցելել Քեսապը՝իբր գրաւական իր հայրական սիրոյ եւ գուրգուրանքին:

1948-ի Օգոստոսին Աղաճանեան կարտինալը տուաւ իր հայրապետական հինգօրեայ այցելութիւնը Քեսապի,ուր ընդունուեցաւ մեծ շուքով համայն քեսապահայութեան կողմէ իբր մեծ բարերար իրենց պապենական կիլիկիան հայաւանին:

1995-ին,մեծ հայրապետին ծննդեան հարիւր ամեակին առթիւ,քեսապցիները ուզեցին կրկին անգամ իրենց երախտագիտութիւնը յայտնել իրենց մեծ բարերարին,եւ նախաձեռնութեամբ Քեսապի զաւակ Հ. Մեսրոպ վրդ. Ճուրեանին,անմահացուցին այդ մեծ սխրագործութիւնը , վիմափոր արձանագրութեամբ մը,Ս. Միքայէլ Եկեղեցւոյ շրջափակէն ներս եւ որուն բացումը կատարեց երջանկայիշատակ Յովհաննէս-Պետրոս ԺԸ Գասպարեան Կաթողիկոսը,ի ներկայութեան Քեսապցի հոծ բազմութեան եւ պետական ու պաշտօնական անձնաւորութիւններու:

Քեսապցիներու նման,Սուրիոյ պետութիւնն ալ իր կարգին իր երախտագիտութիւնը եւ շնորհակալութիւնը յայտնեց Աղաճանեան կաթողիկոսին,անոր մատուցած ծառայութեան համար Սուրիոյ պետութեան,պատուելով զայն Սուրիոյ հանրապետութեան Արժանեաց բարձրագոյն Շքանշանով,1955 թուին,ձեռամբ վսեմաշուք նախագահ՝Շուքրի Ալ Գուաթլիի:

Ներկայիս մեծ ջանք կը տարուի գլխաւորութեամբ Ամենապատիւ Գրիգոր –Պետրոս Ի Կապրոյեան կաթողիկոս պատրիարքին,երանացման եւ սրբադասման հասցնելու Աղաճանեան կարտինալը:Երջանկայիշատակ Կարտինալին իրագործումները եւ բարի գործերու սերմերը անթիւ են ոչ միայն հայ կաթողիկէ եկեղեցւոյ համար այլ նաեւ ընդհանրական եկեղեցւոյ մէջ:

Քեսապը իր կարգին կը միանայ այդ ջանքերուն եւ միջոցառումներուն եւ այդ առթիւ՝ նախաձեռնութեամբ Քեսապի ժրաջան եւ աշխուժ ժողովրդապետ`Հ. Նարեկ Լուիսեանին,կը ծրագրուի կանգնեցնել մեծ հայրապետին կիսանդրին Քեսապի Ս. Միքայէլ Եկեղեցւոյ շրջափակին մէջ եւ կատարել անոր բացումը մեծ շուքով եւ պետական բարձր մակարդակով:

Ես անձնապէս լսած ու կարդացած եմ Աղաճանեան կարտինալի սրբակենցաղութեան, մարդասիրութեան եւ ազգասիրութեան մասին,բայց ի հարկէ զայն մօտէն ճանչցողները շատ աւելին կրնան ըսել անոր առաքինութիւններուն եւ կենցաղին մասին:

Կը վերջացնեմ գրութիւնս մեծ հայրապետին խօսքերով զոր ուղած էր իր կաթողիկոսական գահակալութեան օրը հաւատացեալներուն,որոնց սիրոյն եւ բարիքին այնքան ծառայեց ան.

Սիրելի հաւատացեալներս,որ այնքան գեղեցիկ պսակ մը կը կազմէք իմ շուրջս,այս յուզիչ պարագային մէջ,հայրական սրտի յատուկ շնորհակալութիւն կը յայտնեմ ձեզի,անհուն ուրախութեան համար զոր կը պատժառէք սրտին՝ձեր հովիւին:

Ձեր հոգիներուն փրկութեան պատասխանատուութիւնը որուն համար հաշիւ պիտի տամ Աստուծոյ,կը ստիպէ զիս ձեզի տալ ամբողջ սիրտս:Վստահ եղէք ,արդէն իսկ դուք ունիք զայն ամբողջ եւ միշտ պիտի ունենաք զայն:
