The Armenian Church of the Martyrs on 22 Osmond Street in Worcester, MA is the oldest Armenian church in the western hemisphere that is still in use. The sanctuary was dedicated on December 1, 1901. It also is a historic church not because of its longevity but because it housed the first Armenian church, as a congregation of believers, in America. Also, the Armenian Evangelical Union and the Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA) were founded in this church, in 1902 and in 1918 respectively.
The Armenians who made the church building possible with the help of their Christian brethren in Worcester, MA had come to the U.S. mostly fleeing the horrors of the Hamidian massacres. They hailed from Marsovan, Constantinople, Van, Caesarea, Harpoot, Arabkir, Smyrna, Diarbekir, Adana. They named the church Hai Mardirosats Yeghetsi - Հայ Մարտիրոսած Եկեղեցի - in memory of the martyrs of those massacres. On July 4, 1902, for the very first time, the congregation celebrated, in their newly built church, the 125th/126th anniversary of the July 4 Independence of their adopted country, the U.S. of America, almost half its age in the present. It could very well be that the congregation celebrated their first July 4 Independence on the same pews we celebrated the 246th anniversary.
Yesterday, Sunday July 3, 2022, the small congregation of the church celebrated July 4th during the service for the 120/121 times. The Naeger family, husband Greg, wife Diane and son, Michael on cello, their other son Mathew on trumpet, who was absent this Sunday, led the congregation for a memorable July 4 celebration as part of the Sunday’s service.
I became reflective.
“The Star-Spangled Banner” is the anthem of the U.S. According to Wikipedia: “On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key pens a poem which is later set to music and in 1931 becomes America's national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The poem, originally titled “The Defence of Fort M'Henry,” was written after Key witnessed the Maryland fort being bombarded by the British during the War of 1812.” It is a difficult song to sing and is usually sang solo. On this day, Greg Naeger beautifully sang the anthem.
That may be the reason why “God Bless America” has become, according to Wikipedia, the unofficial national anthem of the United States and is sang in unison on such occasions, as it was sung in the conclusion of the service. The song is a patriotic song but is also the patriot's expression of gratitude to his or her country. According to Wikipedia, Irving Berlin, the composer of the song, in a 1940 interview, has said that the song is “an expression of gratitude for what this country has done for its citizens, of what home really means.”
There are two other songs that I think are no less popular in my imagination. Although both are patriotic songs but both have an unmistakable religious undertone and thus are considered hymns and unlike “God Bless America” are part of the repertoire of the Armenian Evangelical (red) hymnal.
The songs I have in mind are the following two hymns that were sung on Sunday as well.
“O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”, which is popularly known as America the Beautiful. The author of the song is Katharine Bates who copyrighted and authorized people to use
The other song is “'My Country, 'Tis of Thee'', according to Wikipedia it was “written in 1831 by a Baptist seminary student, Samuel Francis Smith. Smith composed the lyrics after being inspired by a German Lutheran hymn and set the melody to the tune of ''God Save the King.” Wikipedia also notes that: “My Country, 'Tis of Thee,” another religious patriotic song, addresses God in the first line and again in the last stanza. All four stanzas glorify freedom and liberty. God is “author of liberty”.
Diaspora Armenians make loyal citizens of the countries they reside and become part and parcel of the country’s fabric in every conceivable way. But they also have their homeland in their hearts as well when celebrating independence day. Armenia’s anthem is Mer Hayrenik – Մեր Հայրենիք – Our Fatherland. Armenia celebrates the foundation of its first independent republic on May 28, and officially designates the day as The Republic Day. On September 21, Armenia celebrates cessation from the once Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) of which it was part, as its Independence Day.
As I was following the lyrics of the “America the Beautiful” the following sentences in the lyrics caught my attention and I thought that they are applicable as patriotic wishes to any country, surely for Armenia as well.
The sentences concluding each of the four stanzas of the hymn are the following:
God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine
And lastly:
And crown thy good with brotherhood.

Հայկական Նահատակաց եկեղեցին, որը գտնվում է Օսմոնդ փողոցի 22 հասցեում, Վուսթերում, ԱՄՆ, արևմտյան կիսագնդի ամենահին հայկական եկեղեցին է, որը դեռ օգտագործվում է: Սրբավայրը նվիրվել է 1901 թվականի դեկտեմբերի 1-ին: Այն նաև պատմական եկեղեցի է ոչ թե իր երկարակեցության պատճառով, այլ այն պատճառով, որ այնտեղ է եղել առաջին հայկական եկեղեցին որպես հավատացյալների միաբանություն: Այս եկեղեցում հիմնվել են նաև Հյուսիսային Ամերիկայի Հայ Ավետարանչական միությունը և Ամերիկայի Հայ Ավետարանչական ընկերակցությունը, համապատասխանաբար 1902-ին և 1918-ին։

Դա կարող է լինել պատճառը, որ «Աստված օրհնի Ամերիկան» God Bless America դարձել է Միացյալ Նահանգների ոչ պաշտոնական ազգային օրհներգը և երգվում է այնպիսի առիթներով, ինչպիսին երգվում էր պատարագի ավարտին։ Երգը հայրենասիրական երգ է, բայց ոչ նաև երախտագիտության արտահայտություն հայրենասեր երկրին։ Ըստ Wikipedia-ի՝ նրա կոմպոզիտոր Իրվինգ Բեռլինը՝ երգի կոմպոզիտորը, 1940 թվականին տված հարցազրույցում ասել է, որ երգը «երախտագիտության արտահայտություն է այն ամենի համար, ինչ այս երկիրը արել է իր քաղաքացիների համար, այն, ինչ իրականում նշանակում է տուն»։
Եվս երկու երգ էլ կա, որոնք, կարծում եմ, պակաս հայտնի չեն իմ պատկերացմամբ։ Թեև երկուսն էլ հայրենասիրական երգեր են, բայց երկուսն էլ ունեն անսխալ կրոնական երանգ և այդ պատճառով համարվում են շարականներ և ի տարբերություն «Աստված օրհնի Ամերիկան» Հայ Ավետարանական (կարմիր) շարականի երգացանկի մաս են կազմում։
Իմ մտքում եղած երգերը հետևյալ երկու շարականներն են, որ երգվել են նաև կիրակի օրը.
«O Beautiful for Spacious Skies», որը հայտնի է որպես Ամերիկա Գեղեցիկ : Երգի հեղինակը Քեթրին Բեյթսն է, ով հեղինակային իրավունքով պաշտպանել և լիազորել է մարդկանց օգտագործել
Մյուս երգը «My Country Tis of Thee»-ն է, ըստ Վիքիպեդիայի այն «գրվել է 1831 թվականին բապտիստական սեմինարիայի ուսանող Սամուել Ֆրենսիս Սմիթի կողմից: Սմիթը երգի բառերը հորինեց գերմանական լյութերական հիմնից ոգեշնչվելուց հետո և մեղեդին դրեց «Աստված փրկիր թագավորին» երգի մեղեդին: Wikipedia-ն նաև նշում է, որ «Իմ երկիր, «Tis of You» մեկ այլ կրոնական հայրենասիրական երգ, առաջին տողում և կրկին վերջին տողում դիմում է Աստծուն: Բոլոր չորս տողերը փառաբանում են ազատությունն ու ազատությունը: Աստված «ազատության հեղինակն է»:
Սփյուռքահայերը իրենց բնակության երկրների հավատարիմ քաղաքացիներ են դարձնում և ամեն հնարավոր ձևով դառնում են երկրի կառուցվածքի մասնիկը: Բայց նրանք էլ իրենց սրտում ունեն իրենց հայրենիքը։ Armenia's anthem is Mer Hayrenik – Մեր Հայրենիք – Our Fatherland . Հայաստանը մայիսի 28-ին նշում է իր պատմության մեջ առաջին անկախ հանրապետության հիմնադրումը և այդ օրը պաշտոնապես նշանակում է Հանրապետության օր։ Սեպտեմբերի 21-ին Հայաստանը նշում է երբեմնի Խորհրդային Սոցիալիստական Հանրապետությունների Միության (ԽՍՀՄ) կազմից դուրս գալը, որպես անկախության օր։
Երբ ես հետևում էի «Ամերիկա Գեղեցիկ»-ի բառերին, ուշադրությունս գրավեցին բառերի հետևյալ նախադասությունները և մտածեցի, որ դրանք կիրառելի են որպես հայրենասիրական ցանկություն ցանկացած երկրի, իհարկե նաև Հայաստանի համար։
Շարականի չորս տողերից յուրաքանչյուրը եզրափակող նախադասությունները հետևյալն են.
Աստված իր շնորհը թափեց քեզ վրա,
Եվ քո բարիքը պսակիր եղբայրությամբ
Հաստատիր քո հոգին ինքնատիրապետման մեջ,
Քո օրինական ազատությունը:
Մինչև բոլոր հաջողությունները ազնվություն են
Եվ ամեն մի ձեռքբերում աստվածային
Եվ վերջապես.
Եվ քո բարիքը պսակիր եղբայրությամբ։
