On July 27, 1993, 5 young Armenians attacked the Turkish Embassy in Lison. The attack was organized by a clandestine organization called the Armenian Revolutionary Army (ARA), whose principals recruited these 5 young Armenian boys, who were contributing bread winners for their families, indoctrinated them, trained and equipped them and sent them to their death on a suicide mission, while the organizing principals stayed behind, and even after forty-three years have not come forward. After the catastrophe, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation stepped forward and assumed ownership of the bodies, and had them brought home to Lebanon and had them buried in the national cemetery with the Catholicosate of Cilicia clergy officiating the burial. The rest of the Armenian organizations in the Diaspora and in Armenia distanced themselves and have remained distancing themselves from this tragedy to this day. Sonig Daghlian is the sister of Vatche Daghglian, one of the five boys. I came across her thoughts about the tragedy that befell upon their family in a comment she had made and her friend Anahid Aramouni Keshsisian had it posted on her Facebook page. Below is my translation of Sonig Daghlian’s comment, more importantly her appeal to the young and upcoming to question their leaders. In doing so, Sonig Daghlian cracks the door open for national discourse on what transpired and its implication. Vaհe H Apelian

The Shadow of 1983: Rethinking Sacrifice, Forty-Three Years Later
Forty-three years ago today, five young men chose to burn their lives away in Lisbon, driven by a desperate belief that ultimate sacrifice was the only key to breaking a wall of global silence. Their devotion was absolute. Their pain was real.
But history is a demanding master, and memory alone cannot substitute for survival.
Today, standing in 2026, we are forced to ask the question we have avoided for over four decades:
Did their sacrifice open a road to our future, or did it trap us in a monument of our own making?
For forty-three years, our collective speech has not changed. We have recycled the same slogans, relied on the same emotional appeals, and worshipped the same tactics. We transformed sacred grief into a permanent political strategy—and the result of that static thinking is plain to see: deepening isolation.
While the world moved forward into complex diplomacy, global economics, and technological warfare, we stayed inside the box of 1983. We confused emotional conviction with actual statecraft, believing that if we suffered enough, the world would eventually care. It did not.
If we truly care about the memory of our fallen—and the future of those who remain—we must stop treating blind inheritance as loyalty.
To the new generation:
-Do not inherit old scripts without reading them.
-Question your leaders when they offer nostalgic speeches instead of viable strategies.
-Educate yourselves in real-world power, modern statecraft, economics, and diplomacy.
Think outside the box that has kept our national discourse frozen in time.
Sacrifice that produces no future is a tragedy that repeats itself. Honor is not blindly repeating the past; honor is having the intellectual courage to break the cycle and build something that lasts.

See less
