A Hero in its Own Right

The heroic deeds of the Armenian soldiers and volunteer combatants will be talked about and told for a long time. 

This one is just one of such heroic stories but its hero is man’s best friend, a pooch, named “Johnny”.

During one of the heavy bombings in the second week of the war, freedom fighter and volunteer combatant Romik Aghekian heard voices from an uninhabited house in ruins. Thinking that there might be wounded people under the rubble, he went to the house and hurriedly removed the piles of stones and planks. To his surprise a dog appeared. It was probably abandoned by its master fleeing the war zone in a hurry.

Romik rescued the dog and took it to one of the trenches of his unit. His comrades-in-arms first complained about bringing an unfamiliar and an abandoned dog there. But in a few days, the friendly and affectionate dog won everyone's sympathy.

Romik named the friendly Fido, “Johnny”.

“Johnny” remained on the front line for about a month and took part in the military operations. Surely, you might wonder, how did it take part? Surprisingly, every time the enemy batteries readied; the clever dog sensed the upcoming bombing, left the trench and ran to the shelter, where it barked so that its new owner and his comrades-in-arms too would come and take shelter. Thus, Johnny very often saved the lives of the boys.

 During one of the last days of the war, Romik was severely wounded. His comrades-in-arms gave him first aid and then drove him to the hospital in a  transport vehicle for the wounded. "Johnny" tried very hard not to leave his new master and stay with him, but to no avail. The faithful dog started running and chasing the departing vehicle in vain and when it realized that it would have been impossible for it to reach the vehicle, the pooch cleverly sneaked and hid itself in the truck in which some of Romik's comrades-in-arms were sitting to follow and assure the safe transportation of their wounded comrade-in-arms to the hospital.

The vehicle transporting Ramik and the truck that followed it crossed the Lachin corridor to Goris, from there to Sisian, and finally to Yerevan. Throughout that long drive, stretching over 300 kms, "Johnny" remained guarded, silent and hidden until they arrived at the Republican Hospital No. 1, where Romik underwent surgery and lost his left leg. Throughout the operation and Ramik’s ensuing recovery, “Johnny” waited impatiently day and night, at the entrance to the reception, for the news of Ramik’s recovery.

When Romik's relatives informed him of “Johnny”'s devotion, Romik pulled himself, and with the doctor's permission and the assistance of his friends, he sat on a wheelchair and was driven outside to pat his faithful dog and assure it that all is well and that he is healthy.

Many of the hospital's current attendees, as well as doctors, nurses and staff, have taken a liking of  the faithful cannine.  It appears it waits for the recovery of its rescuer and new master, Romik, so that he will come out of the hospital and they will go home together.

Պատերազմէն ետք երկա՜ր ժամանակ պիտի խօսուի ու պատմուի հայ զինուորի եւ հայ կամաւորի հերոսական արարաքներուն մասին:

Այս մէկը, հերոսական պատմութիւններէն մէկն է միայն որու հերոսը... շուն մըն է՝ «Ճոնի»-ն:

Պատերազմի երկրորդ շաբթուայ ծանր ռմբակոծութիւններէն մէկուն, ազատամարտիկ- կամաւոր Ռոմիկ Աղեկեանը անմարդաբնակ փլատակ տան մը մէջէն ձայներ կը լսէ: Մտածելով, որ վիրաւոր անձեր կրնան ըլլալ,, կը սկսի հապճեպ հեռացնել կուտակուած քարի եւ տախտակի բեկորները: Եւ ի զարմանք, կը յայտնուի շուն մը, հաւանաբար լքուած, հապճեպ կերպով պատերազմի գոտիէն փախչող իր տիրոջմէն:

Ռոմիկ կ՛ազատէ շունը եւ կը տանի զայն իր զորաբաժնի խրամատերէն մէկուն մէջ: Զինակից ընկերները նախ դժգոհութիւն կը յայտնեն անծանօթ-անտէր շուն մը բերելուն համար: Քանի մը օր ետք, մարդամօտ եւ բարի շունը կը սիրաշահի բոլորին համակրանքը:

Ռոմիկ զայն կ՛անուանէ «Ճոնի»:

Մօտաւորապէս ամիս մը «Ճոնի»-ին կը մնայ ճակատային գիծին վրայ եւ կը մասնակցի զինուորական գործողութիւններուն: Անշուշտ պիտի հարցնեք՛ թէ ինչպէ՞ս:: Զարմանալիօրէն ամէն անգամ որ թշնամի մարտկոցներ ռմբակոծման պիտի սկսին, խեքացի շունը նախզգալով կը ձգէ խրամատը եւ կը վազէ պաշտպանուելու ապաստարան ուրկէ հաչոցով կը զգուշացնէ իր նոր տիրոջ եւ զինակիցներուն, որպէսզի իրենք ալ գան ու պաշտպանուին: Այսպէս, «Ճոնի»-ն շատ յաճախ կը փրկէ տղոց կեանքը: Պատերազմի վերջին եւ դեժ  օրերէն մէկուն, Ռոմիկ ծանր կերպով կը վիրաւորուի: Զինակից ընկերները, նախնական օգնութիւնը կատարելէ ետք, հիւանդատար ինքնաշարժով կը քշեն դէպի հիւանդանոց: «Ճոնի»-ն շատ կը փորձէ չլքել իր նոր տէրը եւ հետը մնալ, սակայն անօգուտ: Հաւատարիմ շունը երկա՜ր կը վազէ եւ կը հալածէ հեռացող  հիւանդատարը եւ երբ կը տեսնէ թէ անկարելի է հասնիլ ինքնաշարժին, խելքը կը գործածէ եւ գաղտագողի կը մտնէ այն բեռնատար ինքնաշարժին որու մէջ տեղ գրաւած էին Ռոմիկի զինակիցներէն ոմանք, որոնք մտահոգ իրենց ընկերոջ վիճակով կը հետեւէին վիրաւորին:

Մարտակերտէն Լաչինի միջանցքէն դէպի Գորիս, անկէ Սիսիան եւ վերջապէս Երեւան երկար ճանապարհը՝ երեք հարիւր հիսուն քիլոմեթր , «Ճոնի» կը մնայ պահուըտած եւ լուռ մինչեւ հասնին Հանրապետական թիւ մէկ հիւանդանոց:

Ռոմիկ կ՛ենթարկուի վիրաբուժական գործողութեան եւ կը կորսնցնէ իր ձախ ոտքը: Իսկ շնիկը ընդունարանի մուտքին, գիշեր ու ցերեկ անհամբեր «լուրի» կը սպասէ:

Երբ Ռոմիկի բարեկամները տեղեակ կը պահեն զինք «Ճոնի»-ի նուիրուածութեան մասին, որոշ չափով ինքզինք գտնելէ ետք  եւ բժիշկին արտօնութեամբ ան կառքի վրայ նստած կու գայ իր հաւատարիմ շունը տեսնելու, շոյելու եւ վստահեցնելու, որ լաւ եւ առողջ է:

Ներկայիս հիւանդանոց այցելողներէն շատեր ինչպէս նաեւ բժիշկներ, բուժքոյրեր եւ անձնակազմ, բոլորին սիրելին է «Ճոնի»-ն: Կ՚ապրի այն յոյսով, որ իր ազատարար եւ նոր տէրը՝ Ռոմիկ ապագինած դուրս պիտի ելլէ հիւանդանոցէն եւ միասին երթան տուն:
